So… Green Lantern… Probably one of the most anticipated movies of this summer, which has also made it one of the easiest to hate prior to its release. Last year around this time I was as stoked as any other random comic geek about this movie. How could a movie about who was probably at the time DC’s most popular character staring some of my favorite actors (Ryan Reynolds, Mark Strong, Blake Lively and Peter Sarsgaard) ever be bad?

Then the stills started trickling out, followed by the trailers and finally the news that an extra nine million dollars were being added to the film to fix special effects. All signs pointed to Hal Jordan’s F-16 starting a nose dive into a disaster.

So tonight with a dim glow of hope dulled by low expectations I left to see Green Lantern and I can honestly say that I was pleasantly surprised. The movie, while not being the summer blockbuster that it should have been, was not a hundred percent horrible either. The CG sequences, especially the ones in the beginning with Abin Sur look amazing, as does most of the planet OA. The characters were likeable and made you care about them with their banter between each other that was often times more interesting than the action scenes.

Despite surpassing my expectations, there are a few downsides to the film. In the beginning it feels super slow, like so slow you consider going out to the lobby for some more popcorn slow. There also is never a real sense of danger in the movie. The embodiment of fear is attacking earth while the guardians bicker and seem mostly not worried about it and Ryan Reynolds is like, “Meh, I got this!” The final downside to this film is that it blows away all DCU cannon. The characters are there, but I don’t know where they got some of the plot they put into this movie.

So we’re left with the question, “should you see this movie?” In my opinion yes, but I wouldn’t make it a super high priority this weekend, just wait a week or two and see it at your leisure (and without the insane crowds)

(Three out of Five Stars)

So, the rapture didn’t occur on Saturday at 6pm as predicted. I can’t say that I’m surprised in the least by this either. I find it unfortunate that someone would attempt to solve the Bible with mathematical equations and then sway so many people into following what is so obviously a false belief. I also find it sad that these people made such a shift in priorities when they thought the rapture was coming and spent so much more effort and financial resources to try to convert people to Christianity. Considering that we can’t predict when the rapture will actually happen, shouldn’t we always be putting forth great effort to convert nonbelievers to Christianity as if it were coming tomorrow?

I think the most aggravating bit to me is that because one radio broadcaster felt he could predict the rapture, all of Christianity has to take a blow in the eyes of society for his actions. I have no doubt that the rapture is coming, possibly even soon, even Christ’s own disciples believed he would return in their lifetimes. But rather than spending time worrying and trying to predict the future, I personally find it a better use of my time to try to build relationship and lead people to Christ via my actions, rather than scare tactics and false prophesies.

Truthfully I wasn’t really expecting anything from a movie based on Thor. I mean he’s the Norse god of thunder, he has a hammer and I’m sure his shiny blonde hair is really soft…

And yes, those traits are all definitely true of the Thor of this movie, but unlike the comic book character or Norse god, by the end of the movie I found myself actually caring about this character and his plight. It also helped that this movie had some super talented actors and pretty amazing special effects on its side.

I felt that Tom Hiddleston really stood out, in the role of Loki, among the actors in this film and provided an excellent performance.

The city of Asgard is beautifully rendered as are several effects regarding travel and the planet of the Frost Giants. Despite how some may feel, these effects were enhance by seeing this movie in 3-D

The costumes of both the Asgardians and the Frost Giants were also remarkable in that they were able to keep the costumes with the comic book color palette without making them seem too over the top or unrealistic. I was especially impressed by the Frost Giant’s weaponry. The only thing that I felt crossed this line was a helm worn by Loki at one point in the movie.

So the question remains, “Should you see this movie in theaters this weekend?”

My answer is, “yes.” This was a really fun movie and despite a few cheesy parts, felt very solid.

I’d also note that it’s probably okay to take your little kids to this as well. There wasn’t a lot of cursing that I recall and I feel like they’d enjoy the action sequences.

So I was driving to work and suddenly i see what looks like a raccoon in the middle of the road squirming on it’s back like it’s already been hit. I swerved to miss it, but i accidentally hit it anway.

At first i was upset about my running over of an animal, but that instantly became the least of my worries as the smell of skunk began to fill my car. I instantly felt sick and at one point threw up into a plastic bag at a stop light.

I tried to stop at every car wash on they way to work to both throw up and to attempt to clean away whatever the skunk had left on the outside of my car, but everyone i stopped at was broken.

Finally found one that was functioning, near my office, but they were unable to figure out how to let me pay inside with my credit card and ended up giving me a free code to wash my car. So i pull up to the car wash and somehow i freaking lost the code… I searched all of my pockets and even got out of my car to look for it, all to no avail.

So at that point, i just gave up and went to work. I left my windows down all night hoping that would clear a lot of the smell out, which it did, but I also sprayed FeBreeze all over the inside of my car when i got home too, just to make sure.

I drove to work tonight and everything seemed okay for the most part, so hopefully I won’t ever have to deal with that again…

Since I started using Firefox something like six years ago and discovered tabbed browsing I began to demand this feature in every app that I use. I use pidgin for tabbed chat and now I use TotalFinder to add tabs in finder.

Before I found TotalFinder I would always have something like four or five finder windows open and would get confused and move files to the wrong window and eventually get frustrated at the time wasted.

Being the child of the internet that I am, I did a google search for “tabbed finder” and came across TotalFinder. Total finder was the answer to all of my prayers and then some.

Suddenly the clutter of all the apps I was running plus all of the finder windows I had open had been significantly reduced and on top of that I can use the visor to instantly bring up a finder window on top of everything rather than using expose to show all of my open windows and then try to figure out which window I was actually looking for.
Another note worthy feature of TotalFinder is that it will arrange all of your folders at the top of the window instead of spreading them out alphabetically amongst the other files, something that has always annoyed me.

I highly recommend this app to all users of OS X, trust me, it’s def worth the $15 to eliminate the headaches not having it can cause.

TotalFinder can be purchased here – http://totalfinder.binaryage.com/

Somehow with the “hustle” of life I managed to get behind on comics and I mean WAY behind!!! Currently I’m in the process of catching back up and hopefully should be finished by the beginning of February. My plan at that point is to begin doing my one line comic reviews on a weekly basis again. I’ve also updated the comics page on the site to list my pulls for February, so you can know what to expect for the month.

In other news, Michael and I started playing DC Universe Online and at the moment I’m def preferring it over WoW. We’ll see how long it lasts, when you’ve played Warcraft for as long as I have, it’s easy to get momentarily caught up in new games.

So here I am less than a week away from the first Durotar Realm Championship Qualifier and I still feel clueless as to what I should play. I’d like to think that my skills have improved since this time last year and I’m fairly certain they have, but there’s always still that self doubt that always hides in the deepest parts of my mind. There are defiantly a variety of options of decks out there to play; it’s just finding one that fits my play style the best, so let’s look at what we have.

Shaman – I feel like this is a utility deck that uses Ancestral Awakening to pull up whatever ally you need the most, whether that be King Varian Wrynn or Iravar, for the current situation. It also abuses the crap out of Adam Eternum, Tuskarr Kite and Crusade Engineer Spitzpatrick to draw a heck of a lot of cards. On top of all of that you have Wind Shear and the ever so annoying combo of Squall Totem and Wavestorm Totem to back you up until you can pull Highlord Tirion Fordring for the win. Oh and did I mention the inclusion of Voice of Reason, a nasty little shield that gives you hero Mend 2 for every five damage on your hero, more or less negating any sort of aggro / rush deck.

Worgen – This deck was previewed on a meta site as a druid deck, but in my honest opinion it works best as a warlock deck. The premise is pretty simple; dump a lot of worgen dudes with aberration and attack! Attack! Attack! Then you get King Genn Greymane who becomes a totally fatty from whatever worgen you have on the board, plus you hero and plus any dudes you’ve made with Signet of Manifested Pain. The main reason I feel that the warlock version of the deck is stronger is because of Hesriana who has the power to take out another King Genn in the mirror match as well as King Varian Wrynn. Another strong point in the deck is that you can play Engulfing Blaze to wipe out an army of ghouls and not worry about your aberration worgen taking any damage back.

Control Warlock – What can I say about this deck that hasn’t already been said. You get an undead destro-lock and throw in cards like Dethvir and Nathanos Blightcaller for some protection. Combine that with Backlash, Dreadsteed, who alone is can be pretty powerful, and a Tuskarr Kite, you have a pretty massive card drawing engine to get you to Kel’Thuzad. Oh yeh, did I mention you have Hesriana in the mix too?

Death Knight – Duh, it’s a DK. You roll in some fan favorites like Corpse Explosion and Army of the Dead with Dethvir and Nathanos and a Dreadsteed to help you deal with aberration allies and you’re more or less good to go. There’s some other stuff in this deck, but I’m not going to really get into as this deck has been so widely discussed that I’d be wasting my breath if I were trying to add anything new to the discussion.

So there you have it, a little preview of the meta you’re likely to see at your local Realm Qualifier. There are probably other decks out there that I’ve neglected to cover here out of sheer laziness (i.e. Koo’zar and Druid shenanigans) or ignorance of their existence, but hopefully this will be a good start for you if you’re still trying to decide what to play in order to conquer your realm.

So let’s be real, I’m fairly certain that it’s a well known fact that I’m an uber apple fan boy. This obsession doesn’t stop at computers or mp3 playing devices though, it even extends into the arena of mobile phones. I have owned every version of the iphone since launch and more or less loved every moment of it. I will admit there were several frustrations along the way, but I always told myself that Steve and the gang would get around to fixing those issue and for the most part they did.

So when the iphone 4 was announced I was beyond excited. It felt like every design flaw that I had ever complained about in prior iterations of the iphone had been removed. The retina display was amazingly beautiful and there was even a forward facing camera with which I could brett farve my friends with!

Needless to say I purchased this device as soon as I was able to and enjoyed every moment with it. Things were going fairly smoothly in the world of my mobile devices, until something happened and a friend of mine from work began to preach the wonders of the android platform to me. Being the apple fan boy that I am, I ignored him at first, but as time went on I became more and more interested. I wanted to try this new world of mobile wonder, yet I still craved the safety of the ios.
Well recently I was at a Best Buy and started playing with a Dell Streak. I liked that it had a larger screen than an iphone and felt more manageable than an ipad in size, I also liked how it flawlessly integrated with my gmail and google voice accounts, but more than anything else I was intrigued by how it ran android. I had to have one.
So a few days later I purchased this device from best buy and began my adventures with android. I was impressed that it had most of the same apps as my iphone had. I was also impressed with how simple everything felt, yet there was still a high level of customization not available to the iphone. A friend showed me how to “side load” apps and I enjoyed being able to install apps from my drop box account.

The tablet itself is of a manageable size, it’s a little too big to be a phone, but isn’t too big to fit in your pocket should you decide to take it somewhere with you, like the waiting room at the doctor’s office. I did have issues finding a suitable case, but ended up settling with an otterbox impact case and then using a USB hard drive case I found at best buy for transport in my back pack.
I’ve had the device for over a week now and have enjoyed every moment with it. I find android to be a fascinating operating system and I’m excited to learn more about it.

Hopefully in a few weeks I can come back with more of an in-depth review, but I felt like the story of what will probably be the beginning of my transition from iphones to android phones should be told.

So I started a new bible reading plan that has me going through the new testament. I did pretty well for the first few days, but as was to be expected I fell a little behind. Well I’m working on catching up tonight and I came accross the following passage.

3 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eyet when you have a log in your own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend,t ‘Let me help you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye. – Matthew 7: 3-5

Something about this particularly bothers me. I don’t claim to be the best person or Christian ever, I try the best I can, but I’m only human and because of that I worry that I’ll always have a plank in my eye. There will always be something I’m struggling with and because of that I am futher concerned that I’ll never be good enough to help out my brother with the “speck” in his eye.

The verses preceding thie above passage say:

1 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others.t The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged. (Matthew 7:1-2)

The above makes me wonder if the ensuing verses are in regards to judging others? While I def feel that they are applicable, it just makes me wonder if I’m unworthy sometimes.

Anyway that’s what I’ve thinking about tonight. If you have any ideas or comments or whatever please feel free to leave them! I am most certainly not a bible scholar, so I welcome the thoughts of others.

Yesterday Bastrop voted down a proposition to be annexed by Austin Community College’s (ACC) taxing district 5,847 (55.2%) to 4754 (44.8%). My question is why would you vote against such a proposition. Voting no is literally like slapping a child in the face and telling him or her that “book learning” is not for them while also slapping the Bastrop economy and saying, “Commerce is bad!” in the same fell swoop.

I’ve had people tell me reasons that having ACC in Bastrop is bad, but none of them made any sense. The main reason I’ve heard that it’s keeping Austin out of Bastrop, allowing us to maintain our “small town heritage.” I hate to tell people this, if they haven’t already figured it out for themselves, regardless of whether or not ACC puts a campus here, Austin and Bastrop will continue to grow towards each other and nothing can stop that. I don’t understand what people’s trepidation is about this. The more people live here, the more businesses will be here and each of those businesses will bring a job. That job will supply a family money with which to spend at other business who have paid employees and so the cycle continues. I see nothing bad about our city growing. I personally was laid off in January of this year and there was literally no one in Bastrop who would hire someone in my field. It took me over six months to find a new job in Austin. So now that I’m in Austin more than I am in Bastrop, I regularly eat out and shop there. This is money that could be going towards business in Bastrop, but now it’s just easier for me to stop at a restaurant, a gas station and even sometimes the grocery store in Austin. I highly doubt I’m the only one in this position, so I highly doubt that I’m the only one spending money elsewhere.

The other reason I’ve been told is that people do not want their taxes to go up. Taxes would have only gone up around ninety-five dollars per hundred thousand that your house is worth. That seems like petty change for what we would be receiving. Right now it is one-hundred and fifty dollars per semester hour for a someone who is a legal resident of Texas living outside of ACC’s taxing district, where it is forty-two dollars when living inside of the district. Right now between 50 and 55% of Bastrop graduates attend college after graduating, but think of how that number could improve if there were a local college campus. Graduates who couldn’t afford to move away and attend college suddenly have the opportunity to go for an affordable price, while living at home. There is also the scenario of people who have previously graduated and entered the work force and who wish to better themselves. Out of district rates as well as the distance to a campus might have put continuing their education on hold, but if there were a local campus, this would no longer be the case.

People who voted against the ACC prop are just delaying the inevitable, while hurting the community they claim to hold so dear in the process. If you care about something, you’re willing to make sacrifices for it, and for me, ninety-five dollars per hundred thousand that my house is worth is an acceptable sacrifice to bring an institution of higher learning to this city and for the ways that it would enrich our community.

So I’m still in the process of training my body to sleep during the day and work over nights, but I think I’ve almost got it down. It’s been a long process involving lots of naps, more than a few headaches, some sleeping pills and a lot of yawning.

So far I still like the schedule. I did think I was going to need way less sleep and would be up more during the day, but as it turns out, I usually get home around 10am and sleep until around 6pm. Ideally I had planned on getting up around 3pm, but that’s just not happening. I’m also having an issue where I’m totally dehydrated when I wake up in the evening with a throbbing headache. Despite these growing pains, I’m still down with the schedule and I feel like it affords me more time to hang with Leah and do other things that I want to do.

As far as work in general, I feel like I’m doing okay. I’m still studying for the Cisco CCNA certification via video on the weekends and it seems like I’m picking up something new at work every day. There’s def still a lot I don’t know, but I figure if I’m patient and keep studying I’ll figure it all out eventually.

Our team at work was originally twelve people, whom I grew to trust and depend upon over the last month, but as of late we’ve been acquiring new people and adding to the team. I haven’t really met anyone who I dislike from these new people, but it’s def stressful for me to try to get to know these people and start working them. As with all things, I’m thinking this will pass in time.

So yeh, that’s how work is going.

I personally only had my pit from my house that I recived for Christmas last year, which was assembled by my brother and I, a canopy, a couple of tables and a few chairs. Despite my lack of equipment, I felt that I put up a valiant effort and produced some of the best meat I’ve cooked to date.

As I write this, I can’t help but be in a good mood. I’m jamming an awesome cover of Third Eye Blind’s “Never Let You Go” by a band called Artist vs. Poet and tonight is my last night to work for three days. While I will admit that working overnights has it’s disadvantages, having a three day weekend every weekend is not one of them.
As usual, this weekend is jam packed with crap that I’m going to need to be doing. When I get off work later this morning, I’m going on a search for some pecan wood. I’m hoping the pecan orchard on the way home will be able to oblige me with such a request, one can never really tell. After that I’m probably going to pass out for several hours and then hopefully have a quiet Thursday evening.
Friday I’m probably going to be spending most of the day getting prepped and ready for the Saturday’s barbecue cookoff that starts around 4am that morning and will go on for who knows how long. I’m entering a brisket, chicken and baked beans. I’d like to think that I have a fairly good chance at winning, but to be honest, I have no idea what to expect.
After all that ends on Saturday I’m prob going to spend the rest of the evening and most of Sunday getting back on track and rested up for the beginning of yet another work week.

So those are the weekend plans as of this moment, but as things usually roll, all of this is subject to change at any second several times over….

I feel like I’m always trying to race against the clock in life, like I have twenty four hours to do twenty eight hours worth of things.
It’s either I’m trying to hurry and get through work or trying to sleep to make it through work and then all of these little things keep coming up. I want to play a game on my phone or everyone and their mother text msgs me…

And in other things it’s like my weekends are usually so booked that it’s insane. I have to make time to hang out with leah and to play cards and to go to church and to make sure i get enough sleep to come in on sunday and then there are the plethora of friends that i have to divide my time with.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining about doing any of these things, though I could prob do without the work…
I just wish I could slow things down and enjoy what’s going on around without having to worry about how I’m going to fit everything else in.
I’m told this is just because I’m an “adult” now or because that’s how our society works, but i’m not buying in!!! hehe

I’m going to try and figure out a way around this. I’ll let you know the results.

So the three day weekend was totally sweet and totally worth the four ten hour over night shifts i now work.

After i got off work on thursday morning, I ran a few errands and just kinda hung our in austin for a little bit before I had to go to san marcos to pick leah up from school, as her car was in the shop and she had rode in with a friend. We ate alvin ords in the car on the way home so that leah could get to work.

After I dropped her off at work, i went to lowes to get some supplies for saturday’s barbecue. The most exciting purchase was the smoke box addon for my grill, something I have been wanting for quite some time. After I finally got home around two, i crashed out for what it hink was the rest of the night.

I woke up at like 8:30am on friday, as leah woke me up whilst getting ready for work. I ended up making myself get out of bed and then went and had breakfast with my dad. After breakfast we watched Iron Man 2.

Friday evening i went to play cards, as usual. This week’s format was draft, which i secretly kind of hate, and i promised myself i wouldn’t draft a horde warlock. I ended up keeping this promise and drafted a horde death knight. This of course being a mistake, for me anyway. I ended up with WAY to many abilities and not enough allies or resources. Even though i did retardedly bad in the tournament, it was still pretty fun and as usual we left to have dinner and riot afterward.

So it’s true that I’ve been listening to The Gay Blades debut album, “Ghosts” in my weekly rotation since it came out in like 2008, so it goes with out saying that I was a little more than excited when “Savages” came out.

So the real question you’re probably wondering is, “well was it as amazing as you made it up to be in your mind or was it like the worst thing to happen to music since like justin beiber?” The answer my friends is that the record is amazing. It’s a different sound than “Ghosts,” but it sounds like the logical progression of musicianship from that record. It’s not as sing-along-with-able as “Ghosts” is, but I’ve only listened to it like four times, so it might obtain that status after a few more spins.

So the verdict my friends is that you should most def but this record. It’s def my fall record of the year.

So in other news Gatsby’s American Dream reformed, which is like a freaking dream come true for me. New music from Nic Newsham and Co has been missing from my life for WAY too long. Check them out by following @gatsbysamerican.

So, what’s been going on?

A lot of different things have been going on with me:

I was transferred to a different dept at work and now are on the over night shift.

I went to a wow tcg tournament in denton… (and made a horrible meta call with my deck)

I’ve been pounding the books working on my CCNA cert.

Um seems like there’s prob more things going on, but that’s in the past. It’s time to look a head to the future.

National Novel Writing Month is fast approaching. For those of you who have never heard of NaNoWriMo, it’s a month long novel writing spree in november, in which the participants attempt to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. For more info, go here

I’ve attempted this twice before and not completed the novel, but I feel like this year will be different. I’m working on some pre november notes that I hope will help me out. we’ll see.

more later…

I literally cannot stop talking about this phone after finally obtaining one of my own earlier this week. Physically the phone is everything I’ve ever wanted out of an iPhone. Apple finally got rid of the oh so easily scratch-able bezel that surrounded the screen and felt shoddy where it met with either the metal of a iphone or the plastic of an iphone 3g/s. I was always more of a fan of the boxier shape of the original iphone to the curved plastic back of the 3g/s.

As far as the death grip phenomenon I’m not sure if I’ve experienced it or not. I did have a couple of phone call drops today, but they were both in areas with sketch reception. I’m not too worried about this as I’ve done several tests and not seen a drop in reception. My bumper should be in within the week so as far as I’m concerned it’s a non issue.

For a case, I’ve indicated that I’m using a bumper, but I also plan on using an UltraSlim Pouch from Sena. One of the things I loved about blackberry’s back in the day was the sleek leather pouch that it came in and I’ve always wanted something similar for the iphone., but never found anything that fit my oh-so-specific tastes until now.

As for screen protection I’m going with the same screen protector that I’ve been using since I had the original iphone, Power Support’s HD AntiGlare Film. From what I understand, they’ve totally re-engineered their screens to work better with the iphone 4′s retina display. I plan on sporting a film on both the front and the back of my phone. These are usually sold at the apple store, but I was unable to find them this time around and ordered a set online. I did also find out that they should be back in stock at the apple store within the month.

Also I’ve become obsessed with dust in my dock connector so, i’m not using Portectorz by Radtech.
